Spooky & Chic Outdoor Decor

Spooky season is here and pumpkins are on front porches everywhere. If decorating your exterior is on your fall home maintenance list, I’ve got you covered. This roundup of outdoor fall decor mixes a little bit of scary with a whole lot of eye-catching and classy elements too.

So if you’re looking for a little bit of inspiration on how to mix the fun elements like skeletons, ghosts, bats, witches and more, with the chic outdoor style, read on!

Classic black, orange and white meet skeletons

What is more Halloween than orange, black and white? This front porch plays on those colours, with orange dried flower wreaths adding an intense contrast to the slate black entryway doors. By incorporating two skeletons (one for each door) and repeating the elements throughout (e.g. two lanterns, one behind each of the skeletons, and two large pumpkins, one at each the skeletons’ feet), there is a subtle sense of balance to the decorations too.

It looks like this home’s main entrance is likely not used very much at all. So if you have a home that’s the same - for instance, you tend to enter and exit through the garage or a side entrance, this kind of set up

Bats and pumpkins create a minimalist look with maximum impact on this colonial

Colonial homes already offer a commanding presence. This home’s unique front entryway door and imposing columns only need a little bit of decor to create an eye-catching scene. Thanks to the hanging bats, dark black witch’s brooms and bright orange pumpkins, spooky successfully meets classy!

Pinecones and pumpkins

I don’t know about you, but the less I have to do to update my home, the better. The pinecone accents on this front porch are perfect, because all you have to do is change out some of the fall and Halloween items for Christmas ones (e.g. change the dried autumn foliage at the base of the pinecone trees for some faux pine bows and ornaments), and you’re all set for the holidays.

Floating witches’ hats over archway

This home’s grapevine archway is a rustic feature that likely takes it through the seasons with ease. From being lush and green in the summertime, to becoming the perfect entryway item to light up throughout the darker months. With a pinecone wreath on the door, a few classic pumpkins on the front steps, and magically floating witches’s hats hanging from the ceiling this home is rustic, classic and a little eerie all at once.

Black and white boo-eauty

Okay, so the title on this one is a stretch lol! But I dare you to say that this entryway isn’t a beau-ooooty. One of the elements of classic style is a mix of black and white. By choosing white pumpkins they add contrast to their dark doors, and complement the black and white stairs. The idea of adding letters to a pumpkin instead of carving it is genius. Wrapping the base of the lights in soft batting adds a bit of creepiness too.

Dark Victorian with strategic lighting and window treatments

If you live in a Victorian home, half of the spookiness is already taken care of for you, thanks to the ornate architecture alone. This home amped up the vibe by adding lights to the creepy vines, as well as deep red window treatments that are kept drawn.

A place to set down your broom

Sometimes, getting the Halloween vibe right is as simple as putting out some brooms and hats. Passerbys will get the message that this home has some magic inhabitants. At least for one night!

Magical entry with overgrown vines

Is it just me, or can you picture Hagrid decorating his door like this? There’s something very cosy and rustic about a vine covered doorway. The gnarled look of the vines used in this archway give it a welcoming look in the daytime, but could easily look more sinister at night.

A murder of crows to greet you

Why aren’t crows used more in Halloween decor? It seems like an obvious choice, yet so many of us miss the opportunity to adorn our homes with a murder of crows!

Dainty lights and eerie pumpkins

This home’s exterior could easily transition to the holidays, but thanks to the copious, jeering pumpkins lining the walkway, there’s no mistaking the Halloween vibes. It’s surprising how just one decoration, repeated so many times, can have such a powerful effect.

A ghostly welcome

There’s just something so creepy about a child-sized ghost, even if it is very obviously just a decoration. These look like they’d make an excellent and cost-friendly DIY for anyone with a spare white sheet, a black marker, a flameless candle and something to drape it all over.

The colour palette here is much more subdued, making this entryway more classy than scary. Although I will say that the expressions carved into the pumpkins is pretty foreboding! Overall, this industrial style entry way that leans a little on the Scandinavian style just may be my favourite of the bunch.
